Arkansas Quartz Again

Back in August, Ray Roth, one of my rockhunting friends from New Orleans, contacted me and asked me when I was going down to Arkansas for some quartz crystals. I told him I would be heading down there the second week of November and would have at least a couple of days free to dig quartz crystals. I usually have some photo work down there as well, but wanted to set two days aside for crystal collecting and set my vacation time up this year for just that. Ray said he would meet me down there and we stayed in touch through September and October by email.

He contacted me a couple of weeks ago, end of October and asked me about lodging options in the Mount Ida area, he was thinking about staying at the Crystal Inn once again, having stayed there before. I told him I would be staying at Mountain Harbor Resort, on Lake Ouachita, which was about five miles east of Crystal Inn and right on the lake. I mainly stay there because its one of the most dog friendly places to stay at, very scenic and pretty, and one of the few places I have found that has very friendly staff that are responsive to your needs. I have stayed at this place in the spring and fall both, one of the nicest and pretty places to stay at, with a staff that truly cares about your stay there. Ray asked for their website and I emailed it to him…he checked into it and decided to stay there as well, told me they gave him a great rate on a room that he couldn`t pass up. Their fall rates are much better because its their off season…and he was going to stay with them for about a week so they gave him a good deal. Their guestrooms are very nice…one or two king size beds and a sofa sleeper, fridge and freezer, coffee maker, patio with chairs and lake view, nice big backyard, and very pretty walk in shower with marble tile walls and glass doors.  http://www.mountainharborresort.com is their website if anyone would want to check them out, very dog friendly place. They also have a great dining room in the main lodge and there is a massage and spa business located on the east side of the resort called Turtle Cove Spa, and besides walking trails there are also horseback rides and boating opportunities available too.

I like to stay in a log cabin when there, and made reservations for one back in August when I talked to Ray….thinking a few friends would visit with me while there and I would need the extra room…then found out the first two nights I wouldnt need the extra room. I mentioned that to the gals at the Lodge and they made me such a sweet deal, I just stayed in the cabin the whole time there. We were so busy during the day anyway, I didnt even notice no one else was there with me besides Missy, my border collie.

Ray arrived there on Tuesday, November 6th, the day before I did and the gals at the Lodge made him feel right at home. I took off Tuesday from my work, to get my packing finished for my trip the next morning, and to pack some goodies for Ray from Missouri and Kentucky both. I took him some fresh found druse and some purple fluorite from Marion, Kentucky, as well. Missy and I rose early the next morning, and after picking up my Mom, we headed west toward Joplin, where we would pick up Hwy 71 and head south to Fort Smith, Arkansas, our first stop. We made good time driving down there, nice sunny day and as we crossed the Boston Mountains on Hwy 71, we noticed quite a bit of color remaining in the trees in the mountain valleys…usually a good sign it will be colorful further south.

We soon arrived in Fort Smith, where I stopped off at my Uncle Harley and Aunt Dorcas` house, to drop my mom off…this is one of her younger brothers and he had already left for the family farm at Waldron to go deer hunting with more of our family members…Mom stays in Fort Smith and goes shopping with the gals til Sunday when we all meet at the farm for a reunion and dinner before heading home. I stayed and had a small lunch with Aunt Dorcas and Mom, and then filled the gas tank and headed south on 71 once again, passing through Waldron myself on the way to Lake Ouachita.

Waldron is where my Mom and Dad were both born and raised, and where they used to take my sister and I at Christmas when we were young and growing up…to visit my grandparents on my Mom`s side, at their dairy farm. I really cherish those memories…helping milk cows, feeding the calves….playing in the hayloft of Grandpa`s old barn…and I really miss my grandparents…my Grandpa lived to 90 years of age…milked cows til he was 65 yoa. Grandpa wasn`t one to sit around and do nothing in retirement though…so he went to work for the US Forest Service there as a carpenter, helping them build fishing docks and pavilions and picnic tables, and also helped them fight forest fires in that area…..and then retired himself 25 years later, and died soon after from a rare blood cancer, caused by moldy hay of all things. I remember his supervisor at his funeral service, came up to me and told me that my Grandpa was something else when it came to hard work…she was amazed at his strength and endurance one day when she left him with the truck and radio on a forest fire, and she took a crew of younger men up the mountainside to rake a fireline…she said about halfway up that mountain, they all came to a staggering halt…out of breath and about to collapse, grabbing on to small trees to hold themselves up…..trying to recover and gather some strength to continue up that steep mountainside…..when all of a sudden here came your Grandpa raking a line with a mattox, right on past them and up that steep mountainside,  moving at a steady pace….she said he wasnt even breathing hard nor had he broken a sweat !!  Needless to say, I dont think she ever doubted him again after that.

I drove on toward Mount Ida from Waldron, stopping off briefly near Y City to photograph the fall color on the Fourche La Fave River….

01 Fourche La Fave River Y City

This is one of my favorite stops because the color along the river is simply beautiful…on both sides of the highway bridge…

02B Fourche La Fave River Y City

I stopped just south of the river to check on a small waterfall in the area of the old store there…but apparently the river was down far enough that the waterfalls were not even running this year…so we turned east on Hwy 270 and continued toward Mount Ida. As I dropped off the mountain east of Pencil Bluff, I crossed the Ouachita River a few miles west of Mount Ida and had to stop and walk back to the bridge with my camera…

04 Ouachita River Mt Ida

…it was absolutely gorgeous color on the east bank…and then I took a good look at the reflections in the water and in the distance the color on the trees on the hillside was fantastic too !!

I had planned to stop at Bob`s Food City there and pick up some milk for my cereal and some Blue Bell Ice Cream, but decided I would get it on Thursday instead. We continued on to Mountain Harbor and arrived around 4 pm. After checking in with Pati and Luann at the Lodge, I stopped off at Ray`s room and gave him his care package…six flats of goodies…we sat on my truck tailgate and he looked over the fluorite and was happy with what I brought him to add to his collection. He showed me a large package of frozen gumbo that he had cooked and brought to me…while I have never tasted it to my knowledge, my Dad LOVES it as does my Supervisor at work. I had him hold on to it while I was there. Missy and I headed over to the cabin to get settled in….

11 Cabin Mtn Harbor

…and then headed back to the Lodge restaurant for supper with Ray. That`s another great feature of the resort…they have an excellent restaurant with great food and service, plus a nice view of the lake, as the restaurant sits up on a hill overlooking a large expanse of water there. I had been looking forward to their hand breaded chicken fingers and steamed veggies, with some of their homemade potato salad…and boy do they know how to brew some good sweet tea, too.

After a good supper, I checked my email and found a reply from an area mine owner regarding a visit at their mine on Thursday morning. I had contacted a buddy of mine, a quartz dealer who resides nearby, a few days earlier and asked for area mine information. Mike had told me that the only mine that was actually digging and open to the public in the area at this time, was Sweet Surrender Mine, north of Mt Ida near Story, on the north side of Lake Ouachita. I had heard of it but had never been there before. He knew the owner and suggested we go there and dig, maybe even talk to Randy the owner and see if we could work a deal with him on getting into a pocket. He told me that a fellow that he sent there two weeks prior, was able to get into a pocket that Randy found with the track hoe, and removed several buckets of crystals nice enough to wrap up. I told Ray and we decided to go there the next morning and see what we could find. I wish now we hadn`t gone there.

Missy and I woke up at sunrise and got a good hike in, walking the north lakeshore as the sun was coming up, this view of the main marina right off our cabin`s back deck…

12 Mtn Harbor Sunrise

..we then walked around the lakeshore toward the north marina…..

12B Sunrise Near North Marina

…..I was looking for quartz veins in the shale, to see if there were any crystals or just massive quartz….

14 Massive Quartz Pieces Lakeshore

..most of the lakeshore was made up of a shale shelf that stairstepped down to the water`s edge…this one shows two nice maple shrubs cloaked in fall colors….

15 Fall Shrubs In Shale

…and occasionally we would come across chunks of massive quartz laying on the beach, in a manner of speaking, and sometimes in the edge of the water….

16 Massive Quartz on Lakeshore

…and then we walked on around to the north marina via the lakeshore, here you see a couple more of the cabins on the lake…

…we then watched a couple of guys heading out of the harbor toward open water to get some fishing in….

19 Fishermen Headed Out Early

…in the upper left hand corner of the photo above you`ll notice a house near the top of the mountain…its referred to as a glass house…I met the residents on my May trip there and photographed it the previous fall season there.

When the fishermen hit the open water, they really opened up the boat and took off…

19B Fishermen Headed Out Early

…as we got over to the north marina, we hit a stretch of shale that looked pretty and shapely…looked like it would make nice stepping stones….

21 Shapely Shale Lakeshore

At this point, we reached the end of the road that our cabin was located on so we started back to it…passing Cabin 18 up as we walked back…I stayed in it a few years back for a couple of nights, its the most popular cabin they had back then, its the closest one to the water….

22 Cabin 18 North Shore

After a quick breakfast of Arizona Green Tea and a few cookies, we met up with Ray at the Lodge and then headed to Mount Ida…I needed to stop at the bank`s atm and then we drove north on Hwy 27 toward Story. We arrived about 9 am and parked in the parking lot at the top of the hill and met up there with Aaron, the owner`s son.

25 Sweet Surrender Park Lot

Aaron told us his dad, Randy, would arrive within the hour and after a bit of small talk, Aaron gave us the nickel tour of the mine property….

23 Sweet Surrender Mine Pit

We explained to him that we were interested in getting into a pocket of crystals and he told us that two pockets had been discovered the day before. He took us down to the track hoe and showed us a few boulders that he had dug out the day before that were covered with some nice two and three inch long crystals..they were still covered in clay mud but you could tell they were nice sized. He also pointed out the location of the pockets in the pit below the track hoe, one up above a shelf and the other believed to be below the shelf and under a boulder that weighed a thousand pounds or more.  I walked back up the hill to grab my camera and as I did, I looked around on the ground to see if I could spot any crystals laying around…seeing nothing more than alot of generic rock, dirt, and a few damaged crystals here and there occasionally. I have never been to a mine where nothing collectible was laying on the ground…til today.

Ray and I dug for a couple of hours and found absolutely nothing…let me rephrase that….we found absolutely NOTHING worth taking home with us……there, thats better. Randy arrived about noon and asked Aaron what we were finding…Aaron told him we were finding absolutely NOTHING and suggested that he fire up the track hoe and dig out the area a bit to see if any pockets were truly located there. After several attempts, and a battery jump with assistance from Aaron, Randy was finally able to start the track hoe and proceeded to dig out the area we had previously been digging in. Once finished, he pointed to an area farther up hill that he felt contained a pocket and then suggested that we start digging out the area we had already dug into. After a few minutes of digging and again, not finding or even seeing evidence of any crystals, he suggested that we settle up.

I wasn`t sure how Ray felt about it, but personally, I was not impressed with anything I had seen so far. I explained to Randy that while we had dug for a couple of hours, we had not located anything at all nor seen any evidence of crystals in that area. I asked him if it was possible for Ray and I to split the cost of a true pocket and Randy was not agreeable to that, wanting even more money than the other fellow paid, that Mike had referred to him. I advised Randy that I would have no problem paying that as long as he could actually point out the pocket and show us evidence of crystals inside that pocket, in other words, a sure thing, but I wasnt going to pay for a mere possibility of finding something or nothing at all. We couldnt come to an agreement other than to pay the normal dig fee, so we returned to the normal dig area. If anyone wants more information on this conversation, just email me and I will be glad to tell you about it, but let me say this, I would NOT recommend this place to anyone.

After about an hour of digging around and surface collecting in other areas of the mine property, which contained alot of shale and more damaged crystals, I told Ray I was ready to leave. I have never seen a mine with so much CRAPPY rock laying all over the place, total waste of time and money.

We headed back to Mt Ida, stopping off at Bob`s Food City and picking up some milk and ice cream…I had to get me some Blue Bell ice cream…. and then returned to the Lodge for supper.  I told Ray we would go to Miller Mountain Mine the next morning…a mine that he would see and find lots of good crystals at…I have been there several times and NEVER had a bad day there…plus they only charge ten dollars a person, less if in a group of seven or more, they have reasonably priced baskets of crystals some of which come from a variety of mines in the area…. but I have always had good luck pulling some really good material from the baskets I have purchased there.

After yet another good supper at the Lodge, we retired for the night and prepared for a better day of quartz crystal collecting. For whatever reason, which I havent figured out yet, I again rose early the next morning…and Missy and I took off for another hike…thinking I`m supposed to be on vacation so shouldnt I be sleeping in later ??  This time Missy and I hiked over to the west side of the lake where we normally shoot sunsets from, the north point…this time though the sunrise this morning was putting on a good display and making me think it was sunset instead….

Looking the other way, to the east though, the sky was rather cloudy a few minutes later as we walked around to the campground side of things…

38 Fall Color North Shore

After cleaning up and getting some breakfast down, we met Ray at the Lodge and after checking email, we headed to Miller Mountain Mine via the backroads…Ray told me when we finally arrived there, that he was all turned around and didnt know how to get back to the resort from there now…I told him by avoiding the drive through Hot Springs we had probably saved about 30 minutes driving time going the backway. We stopped at the entrance rock shop and I introduced him to Faith…

39 Miller Mtn Mine Entrance

……one of the caretakers, who with her husband Bill, helps run the mine for Jimmy Coleman, the owner. Faith was telling us that many of the fee based mines had shut down in the past year, due to the stringent and restrictive policies of the Obama Administration...she said the agencies that control the use of the land, environment, and safety of mines, were now regulating the quartz mines under the same set of rules and regulations that coal strip mines are governed by, and many of the mines had simply folded under the onslaught of paperwork, red tape, and hoops the owners were expected to jump through these days….. not to mention some of the outlandish things they were penalized and written up for. One of the mine owners had told us they were written up for not having a bathroom on the premises and the fine was five thousand dollars. After consulting with someone in the know about IMSHA rules and regulations, who wasnt able to locate any laws requiring one, and suggested purchasing a five gallon bucket with a toilet lid and disposable plastic bag inside the bucket…. the inspector on the next trip observed the bucket and voided out the citation to the mine owner. I have been to several mines, not just in Arkansas, but other states and there are many mines that do not have bathrooms on site and they widely publicize that fact. I think our government is becoming a sad state of affairs when they start harassing folks over idiotic stuff like this, and yes, the current administration should be held responsible for the conduct of the regulating agencies when it gets this bad. After all, wasn`t the phrase  ” less government  ” one of the campaign promises made to the people, just four years ago ???!!!!  Yeah…thought so…someone up in DC needs to get a clue…all these people are trying to do is eke out a basic living…and if anyone up there thinks its an easy life, they oughta come on down here in their expensive three piece suits,  and  find out for themselves just how ” easy ”  it is !

Most of these mine owners spend each moment of available daylight each day, digging in their mines or working to provide good tailings for the public to dig through to find crystals, not to mention working on the equipment when it fails, the cost of replacing parts to keep the equipment working, the cost of paying employees, maintaining a safe working area and environment at all times, preaching safety to the public visitors, and securing their sites. If you come across a mine owner who is working less hours…and there are a few of them these days…its because of the regulating agencies driving them nuts. I know I`m preaching to the choir for the most part…but why do we have even more government instead of less, like we were promised.

After talking to Faith, Ray and I took a look at the baskets they had left and then walked around looking at the clusters they had on display outside the shop, so Ray would get an idea of what could be found there. Faith told us that some folks there the day before, had found several smokies, so we headed on up to the parking lot, where I released Missy from the truck and we prepared to do some digging. I told Ray to get ready to find lots of crystals….

40 Miller Mtn Tailing Pile

Faith told us there were five fresh piles up at the tailing pile area and the dirt above the piles had been turned over as well….

41 Miller Mtn Tailing Piles

We both got changed into our boots and grabbed our buckets, bags, and tools and started looking around. Within the first eight minutes of searching, both of us had filled at least a bag or bucket and were going back for more. I no sooner stepped up into the dirt when I started spotting crystal points and tips sticking out of the dirt, and a few of them turned out to be smokies. Ray and I were about ten feet apart and within moments he spotted this nice golden healer cluster very close to his left foot and under a large dirt clod….

49 Golden Healer Found by Ray

….one of my spectacular finds was a large crystal point that I found in one of the piles a few inches down…I spotted just a sliver of the crystal face sticking out and it just kept growing as I dug it out…in the photo below its in the center at the top….

42 Crystals Found Miller Mtn

…and here are a few more that I found within the first hour of looking around…

43 Crystals Found Miller Mtn

…so by this time I am definitely up on the dirt above the piles and working my way to the west, away from the entrance…and by this time we have been joined by another couple, Larry Badger of Kansas City, and his sister, who left there at 5 am and drove straight down to Miller Mtn Mine. Larry told us that he had talked to a country gal named Docia from the Salem, Missouri area and she told him he should drive down in the fall to get some Arkansas quartz…so he took her advice and brought not only his sister with him, but a couple of the Independence Rock and Mineral Club members as well. I told him Docia is one of my best rockhunting friends and we often rockhunt together, but this week is deer season and she cant be pried away from the woods in central Missouri this time of year.

I was inching my way west along the dirt wall above the piles and came upon this little number, palm sized and spotted the yellow color and the irredescence as well…

44 Small Golden Healer Found

..I looked up to find Ray taking a break from digging….

46 Ray Roth

…after he rested up, he turned around from where he was sitting down and dug down a little bit and within seconds, pulled this nice golden healer on the left side of the photo below,  from the dirt wall….

48 Two Golden Healers Found

…and a few seconds later, he spotted more yellow in the dirt and mere inches away from the first one…he pulled out these two one after the other….

47 Two of Ray`s Finds

…the cluster on the right up above, has a very large single crystal laying down above a multitude of smaller crystals…he was pulling out all of them amidst several oohs and ahhs from the rest of us…in all a total of five basketball sized clusters of golden healers and some smaller ones as well. We continued to dig and pick up crystals and clusters for the next hour, both of us finding several larger plates covered in a thick clay mud and some softball sized chunks as well. We  took off about 4 pm after picking up a couple of baskets and bidding Bill and Faith good byes and see you laters.

We stopped off at Colton`s Steakhouse on the way back for a good steak and fixins…I contacted one of my models, Scott, who was just leaving his workplace and he met us at the steakhouse. Scott visited with us over dinner and then took off for home as we headed west to the resort. After checking my emails once again, Missy and I headed back to the cabin for the night. We had decided to try Judy`s Crystals the next day and dig at Fisher Mountain Mine, which is located south of the Mt Ida Airport. Ray didnt sleep well that night and called early to ask for a few extra hours of rest. I had no problem with that at all, getting another hour of rest myself, and then getting our walk in around the resort.

We walked down to the wood bridge on the Harbor North Road and shot the sailboats over at one of the Marina`s, looking toward the area of the Lodge….

50 Sailboats & Fall Colors

…then heard a speedboat coming down the lake behind us, so turned around and snapped these guys speeding along against a wall of colorful fall foliage on the far shore….

51 Speedboat

…breezed by one of the newer family cabins on our way to the Lodge area….

52 New Cabin Harbor North

…and then drove up to the Lodge area to see the big fireboat the resort has tied up at the main marina behind the seasonal Subway Restaurant….

53 Joplin FD Fireboat

…a retired Coast Guard Cutter that was actually purchased for the resort by a private donor in the area. I actually had the pleasure of touring it back in May when it was very warm both inside the cabin and holds as well as outside…the front machine gun had been replaced by a water deck gun, pretty neat investment for the entire lake area. I turned around and looked back to the east toward the boat launch site and saw some beautiful fall color as well as a couple of sailboats drydocked and sitting up high….

54 Mtn Harbor Boat Launch

Missy and I headed back to the cabin to get in some breakfast and tv time while waiting for Ray`s phone call that he was ready to go to Fisher Mtn Mine. By noon, Missy and I were driving to Judy`s Crystals to meet Ray there…. arriving a bit early, I met and visited with Judy and her friends,  and walked around the displays to see what Judy had for sale outside the rock shop…finding some pretty quartz clusters and alot of colorful slag glass, for the most part. Ray pulled up soon after and we made our arrangements with Judy to drive on up to Fisher Mtn Mine and see what we could dig up.

The Fisher Mtn Mine has alot of history associated with it…..it`s Ocus Stanley`s original mine….he is the guy that got the quartz crystal hunting craze started in the area….the mine sits on top of Fisher Mtn about two miles south of the Mt Ida airport, easily spotted on Google Earth Maps off Logan Gap Road before it intersects with Owley Road. For those of you that know Judy, she suffered a stroke about five weeks ago and is now hobbling around on crutches and recovering from it. She seems to be doing pretty well now, her only complaint that she hadnt been to the mine in six weeks. Ron Coleman also has an old mine up there,  accessed by the same road, closed to the public by a very heavy steel gate.

This is the road that ascends much of the mountain to the mine, after passing through a very heavy steel gate off Logan Gap Road…a very pretty and scenic drive up I might add, this time of the year….

55 Road to Fisher Mtn Mine

We ascended three times and leveled off three times in the mile and a half drive from the gate to the mine clearing…with a few scenic views of the mountains and valleys as we went…I had been told this might be a rough road, but as I pleasantly discovered, the lane was a thick carpet of oak leaves and pine needles under making for a soft ride instead with just an occasional rough spot along the way.

This was the view from the top of the mountain, when we arrived a few minutes later….

56 View From Fisher Mtn

The view from up there was extraordinary…you could see to the south for miles and the color up there was pretty nice as well for a region without much rainfall since September, spotty but nice…

57 Fisher Mtn Mine

….with a large swath of pine trees right below the border of the mine itself…Ron Coleman`s mine on Fisher Mountain was through this gate and on down the road, closed to the public….

58 Gate to Ron Coleman`s Fisher Mtn Mine

We parked near the pines at the top of the hill by the road and walked around to surface collect and get our bearings first…Ray had been to this mine last year and it took him a few minutes to figure out where his party had been digging at then…things were a bit different layout wise this time...

59 Ray Preparing to Dig

We walked down to the east end and only found more rock down there, no easy digging, so we returned to the main area and began looking for some potential areas to dig into……we met up with Larry Badger and the rest of his club party there…they had done quite a bit of digging since arriving there at 9 am, but hadnt found much and were preparing to head to a known locality for wavellite.

62 Main Area of Fisher Mtn Mine

…we found a few small crystals after digging in some obvious areas already explored in….

64 Crystal Found Digging

65 Crystal Found Digging

Ray and I decided to explore under the roots of a few pine trees in the area and finally started finding a few crystals and clusters…nothing to write home about but more than we had found out in the open main area.

66 Digging in Base of Pines

…after digging a few hours here… we started wrapping things up and on the way back to the trucks, Ray discovered a place where someone had recently excavated an entire sandstone shelf, apparently finding quite a few crystals of all sizes, yet breaking several in the process of removing them from the host rock. We were able to find a few in their highgrade pile as well as a few singles just sticking out from the host wall, to take home with us.

And now for the rest of the story on the history of this mine, told to me by several sources down there….several years ago, Ocus sold his remaining lease on the mine to Jimmy Coleman, who took his digging equipment up there and dug down into the sandstone and dirt…. discovering a huge crystal cavern, with large crystals in single points, doubles, and clusters with VERY BIG crystals attached to the walls and the ceiling…they removed as many as they could and took them to the Tucson show, where he made a huge profit selling them. The story I was told…by two different people who dont know each other but know that area well…was that while removing those crystal clusters, a hole opened up in the back wall behind that cluster… they took a flashlight and looked inside…. saw a cavern even bigger and deeper than the one they were standing in, also loaded with crystals and clusters, some of them looking like they would fit on a pallet just fine. They covered the opening to the original cavern with plywood and dirt…. and made plans to return to excavate the second cavern, but alas, the Forest Service refused to allow Jimmy back in nor honor the remaining time left on his lease. After hearing what he had paid the Forest Service for that lease, I can well understand why many people have no respect for our Forest Service any longer. Things like this can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

We returned to the resort after descending down the mountain and relocking the heavy steel gate and returning the key to Judy`s Crystals Shop, just in time for a pretty sunset over the lake…

…had a good supper of hand breaded chicken fingers once again, with the homemade potato salad…they really believe in feeding you there at the Lodge restaurant…then went back to the cabin to finish as much of the blue bell moo-lenia ice cream as I could. Missy and I got up about 7 Sunday morning, got a short hike and run in before packing the truck for the drive home, and before it started raining…the skies were dark when we finally stepped outside the cabin to take hike around the shore again…there was an extensive cold front coming in from the west, part of the Brutus Storm that had pounded the northwest with heavy snows earlier in the week, but the forecasters had said the storms and rain showers would hold off til noon at least…guess they were wrong again. We headed up to the Lodge to check out and check my email once again…and while there I updated the McRocks board too. Ray came down to send us off and gave me a big frozen chunk of gumbo to take back with me, and said, ” lets do this again sometime ” 🙂  He wasnt leaving til Monday or Tuesday and said he would let me know that he made it home safe and sound, his drive is about as long as mine, eight hours.

Here are some of my clusters and crystals all cleaned up.

I was very happy though, when I cleaned the mud off and saw what I had. 🙂

Great Day of Collecting At MFQ

Got word earlier this week that a buddy of mine from Colorado, would be coming to visit later this month, so Missy and I loaded up and headed to MFQ to check and see what was new there. I had told Ian about this spot before and since it had been several weeks that I had been there last, I wanted to see if there had been any new activity there. I had checked in with Docia on Friday and found she and Floyd would be deer hunting with their bows this weekend and unable to join us. I got a late start Saturday morning, the forecaster the night before was calling for a cool morning and possible rain, so I didnt get started down there til 9:30 am, putting me there almost noon. Lucikly for me, the forecast was for the St Louis area only..turning out to be a very nice warm and sunny day.

We arrived and I parked down at the bottom of the entrance hill, and after changing into my boots and grabbing a couple of bags and tools, I walked over toward the point that we had often worked before.

06 Worked Right Side

You will notice my blue bag on the right side above…I actually started on the left side of this point, on the other side to the left up there…thinking I had found a pocket, but went back to the truck to get my hammer and chisel…on the walk back, I skirted around a small pile of fall down rocks and actually found a few pretty crystals in that pile…took them back to the truck and set them on my tailgate…came back and walked farther down that pile and over to this clay red muddy area and started seeing even more crystals that had fallen down from above, so I walked up to find out where they had originated from. Low and behold, I discovered a pocket of poker chips and dolomite druse within just a few minutes of checking this wall on the right side of the point. I cant tell you how many times we have looked along this wall and found nothing at all, pocket wise.  While walking up to that wall, I spotted this beauty sticking up out of the mud partially…the only thing I could see were the crystals sticking out of the mud…..

03 Found in Mud

….and after cleaning it off this morning with the water hose, I was pleased that I had brought it home with me…though there is some damage to some crystals, there are several crystals and dolomite druse that are very pretty…

21 Found in Mud Cleaned Up

Here are the ones I found and set on the tailgate before I started digging into the pocket in the wall….some that someone else apparently didnt want to take home or just rolled down from a pocket up above….

01 Soon After Arrival

02 Crystals Found So Far

…the big one on the left side of my tailgate, had crystals on both ends and just a few small pockets of dolomite druse in the middle….

04 Cobbed Down

….so I decided to pull a Mike Streeter and do some cobbing down to save this end with the neat dark colored poker chip crystal embedded….

05 Cobbed This Corner

…so I walked back over to the right side of the point wall and began examining the pocket up close and deciding what course of action to take…using my mini mattox for about thirty minutes and pulling out some nice crystals and clusters….

07 Found Pocket Here

…some like this beautiful poker chip nestled in some dolomite druse….

08 Pretty Poker Chip

and pried this chunk of crystals out of a pocket inside the main pocket….

10 Poker Chip Chunk Found

..my pile of crystals so far was a bit small, but the day was young yet and I was just getting started….

11 Finds So Far

I had finally reached the point where I needed to do some hammering with the chisel, so I walked over to the truck, took a short water break, and returned to start getting some extra matrix and rock out of my way so I could get into a few pockets that were visible but slightly blocked out. Once I was able to free up the pockets, believe me, I started pulling crystals and clusters out right and left. Since I had arrived mid day, I didnt take time to photograph and document my progress much. Within another hour, I had reached the point where I could go no further….

12 Pocket Cleaned Out Almost

…even with one pocket staring me right in the face…

13 Pocket Crystals

13A Pocket Crystals

…dont get me wrong, I cleaned out this pocket as much as I could and then stopped to wrap up what I had pulled out, which was quite a bit….

14 Pocket Finished

15 Finds Pile

…to go further with what was still there, plenty of potential sign for more pockets by the way, would require moving a lot of rock above and I didnt want to find out exactly how much rock that would wind up being…

16 A Few Pockets Left

I spent about thirty minutes wrapping and high grading, leaving some pretty stuff for someone else to find, taking more spectacular stuff home with me. Trust me, I took alot of pretty stuff home, I have a lot of friends who cant travel around like me and find stuff, so I always like to share with them, like to see their faces light up when you hand them stuff like this….just makes my day and usually theirs too.

I decided to walk up to the upper bench and see if I could find any fall down crystals up there, so  I grabbed two more bags out of the truck after securing Missy inside the truck with the ac on for her, and hiked up above. I also checked the wall for more pockets, but alas, they were high up on the wall, where we had originally found them when I was there shortly after the blasting. There were no pockets to be found down at the new walking level. I did find a few single crystals here and there, but that was about it. I walked back down to the truck and drove across the lower level to a newer area to check it out.

17 Walked Upper Bench

…where after a few minutes of walking around,I found this beauty just sitting in a small pile waiting to be found…

25 Found This in New Area Pile

I quickly returned it to the truck and walked farther up in this new area, and walked upon a beautiful poker chip triple in a dark chocolate brown color and a few in a deep green color. I also found a few chunks of a pale pink color calcite, but nothing in poker chip form. Most of these had some matrix attached, but was very pretty and all of it went home with me. I was walking around up near the top, and walked right up on this huge cluster of crystals, partially buried, waiting for me….

22 Huge Cluster Chocolate Color Poker Chips

…shown above in my backyard after cleaning. I was completely amazed….I turned around in shock,  and found this one right behind me….

23 Huge 2nd Cluster Chocolate Color Poker Chips

…now I was really in shock, two large beauties like this within ten feet of each other, possibly from the same pocket and blasted down from above. If you want to know exactly how big they are, think of a beach ball under your arm and you`ll have a good idea how big they were to me,  when I stashed each one under my arms and carried them to the truck.

I was very happy when I found both of them, specially after I was able to dig them both out with ease….both of them big, both beautiful, both with some damage…but thats to be expected when looking in a blast pile…put yourself in their place…how much damage would you have it you were suddenly dynamited out of your safe secure position in a limestone wall and landed in a blast pile among many other rocks, some bigger than you.

Despite the damage to each one, there were several smaller pristine crystals attached to each of the bigger crystals. The second cluster had obviously been sheared off, but there was a perfect set of twin crystals attached to the other side…I`ll try to photograph the other sides of each one tomorrow and add them so you can see what I`m talking about here.

I no sooner walked back up to take another look, when I spotted a pocket along the wall and stopped to investigate it more…with my mattox I was able to pull a few plates of several shades of colored dolomite druse crystals, even a few with dogtooth crystals attached to them and what looks like a smattering of marcasite on a few of them. I had two bags with me filled with some wrapping cloths and put them to good use…emptying the pocket required about thirty minutes, cutting into my leave before it gets dark time…and then I decided to make one more walk around…and found a huge chunk of green poker chips embedded in the ground….it makes a good yard rock but thats about it.

After loading the two bags of dolomite druse from the pocket and the three huge chunks of poker chips into my truck, after wrapping them all up,  Missy and I headed for home. I was quite tired and looking forward to an extra hour of rest…even though I didnt get it due to a bad trailer fire call around midnight. Nothing beats a good nap the next day though. 🙂

Druse and Poker Chips Mid October

After a couple of weeks of hard rain and thunderstorms, I decided to return to the new druse spot and see if anything nice had been washed out of the clay, and boy am I glad I did.I also wondered if we would find any color on the trees remaining, and as we drove into Steelville, we saw a few beautiful maple trees in full bloom….

01 Main Street Foliage Steelville

Missy and I arrived to find alot more erosion, this area one night alone had about four to six inches of rain in just a few hours and you could tell the water had done some serious carving in the clay when I walked up on it. Luckily it wasnt too muddy when we arrived, but I tried to give Missy some instructions on staying out of the mud pit while we were there…apparently those instructions fell on deaf dog ears, let me tell you, cause within about twenty minutes she ran up to me pretty much covered in sloppy red clay mud from her stomach down…I was not a happy camper and she sensed it…dogs are pretty smart sometimes…they realize you arent happy any longer and they walk away and leave you alone…luckily for both of us, she came up with a great idea and went somewhere nearby and found a clean water source and cleaned up before she returned to my presence. I wont elaborate on my thoughts while she was gone, but I can safely say I failed to bring an extra towel for the back seat and I was not very happy with the situation. I soon got busy picking up beautiful pieces of bubble druse all over the place, filling three bags within the first thirty minutes….this is what the site looked like when we arrived...

…and here are a few photos of what all I found that morning there…picking up some pieces in the heavily eroded areas of the photo above up on that hillside…my first trip walking over to it and very impressed with what I saw and found there…the following photos show the druse all cleaned up and lots of bubbles…

More Druse Found and BIG Druse

…the last photo above, shows a very large druse chunk that I found on the first trip there…weighs about one hundred fifty pounds, took me a few trips to get it to the truck, covered on three sides by bubbles….I stayed for a few hours, filling up six bags full of druse, uncovered those nice chunks above that were covered in bubbles and carried them to the truck and wrapped them up, before heading home and stopping off at the secret spot on the way……I was very happy with what I found at the druse spot, and only covered about a third of the ground there this trip.

On the way to the secret spot to expand the new pocket, we came up on this beautiful tree that was past peak, and leaves were falling off it in the gentle breeze….

06 Pretty Tree On Way

…within twenty minutes of arriving, I had the area around the pocket cleared back to the rock wall behind it and started bailing water….

10 Cleared Back to Wall

..eventually I cleared the area around that big rock on the right side as well, but didnt find any soft spots that would indicate another entrance to this pocket and didnt pursue it any further…I might do that the next time I`m up there since I`ll have more energy then. I took a break after cleaning it off and retrieved my hammer and chisel as well as another bag….

11 Bailing and Expanding

…after bailing it down, its obvious to me that this pocket goes under the big wall in front of me there, and I`m not going to be able to pursue it any further. My best bet will be to either look to either side for more openings, which will require a lot of cleaning of piles of rock gravel, or simply going and finding another pocket and starting all over. Within the first few minutes after bailing it down, I was able to liberate a few pretty combos…

08 Druse Combo Pulled From Pocket

09 Second Druse Combo From Pocket

…and the next photo shows the crystals at the edges of the expanded pocket…

12 Crystals Under Surface

..what you don`t see is that I was able to liberate a few small twins and triples and small clusters of crystals from the bottom of the pocket on three sides, mainly the big base in the foreground here. I`m thinking I`ll prob dig the original pockets back out when I return and see if they lead anywhere on either side and back behind me, and then maybe look for more pockets.

Return to the New Pocket in October

I had the weekend off once again, after returning from my trip to Colorado and decided since I didnt get to do any rockhunting out there, I would head back down to the secret spot and see if I could expand that new pocket some more. It seemed to be deep and going in about three different directions, and I wanted to see if I could open it up some more and see what it might hold. Missy and I loaded up and took off down there about mid morning, cause this time it was a bit cool and I wanted to give it a chance to warm up a bit before I arrived. I walked in and started digging with the mini mattox after clearing off some of the loose gravel mixture surrounding the existing pocket….within minutes I had worked up a pretty good sweat and took my jacket off and went to get my bailing bucket and some more tools and bags…..

01 Expanding Pocket by Wall

…the pocket was full of water and it was obvious at some point today, I was going to have to bail some water…but I decided to clear more surrounding gravel and rock and see if I could find more pocket openings instead…

02 Gonna Have to Bail It

…and it didnt take me long to find a soft spot once I had some area cleared back toward that back wall….

04 Another Pocket Found

…so I began lightly scraping down with the mattox and pretty soon, I had signs of another pocket beneath me opening up….

05 Another Pocket Expansion

…and pretty soon, this pocket really started to open up….

06 Crystals From New Pocket

…and you can see the growing pile of crystals from this new pocket above and close up below….

08 Pile of Crystals Growing

I took a water break and then cleared some more rock and gravel away and decided to do some serious digging in the new pockets on top of the week old pocket….

09 Expansion on Top of Expansion

…and closer up…

10 Just Keeps Getting Bigger

…you see that somewhat round piece that my chisel is pointing toward up above ?  I took that out and it turned out to be a nice chunk of druse hanging upside down with some poker chips attached…but first I`m going to show you that top pocket closer up…

11 Top Pocket Opens Up

…as well as a close up of some of the crystals lurking under the surface water in the bottom pocket….

12 Crystals Under Surface

…and here is the growing pile of crystals and plates…

14 Crystals and Plates

…and the floor of the week old pocket is laced with crystals as well…

15 Floor of Pocket Laced with Crystals

…and in the mouth of the pocket as well….I was reaching in and pulling as many out as I could…a bit hesitant at first, remembering what Docia told me when she said she couldnt make it today…and wishing me lucky reaching into the cold pocket water. What was really funny was that the water in that pocket turned out to be fairly warm, not in the least bit cool at all, and I was pulling several crystals out, and many were firmly attached to the walls and floor of the deep pocket too…this one seemed to be at least ten inches deep, I was often in up to my elbows…

17 Crystals In Mouth of Pocket

…I turned my attention to the week old pocket and while pulling some of the crystals from the bottom of it, I ran across yet another small pocket off the floor of it…

18 Another Small Pocket

…and closer up you can see crystals lurking inside it as well…

19 Crystals All Over

…I followed this one til it deadended into a wall and then decided to stop here and return in a couple of weeks and see how much further I could go in the wall direction. I covered up the other end with some flat rocks to keep any stray stuff out…..

20 Covered Expansion

…I was curious to find out how deep this pocket was going to turn out and whether I would be able to widen it and bail it down to find some clusters to chip out…guess we would find out the next time I was down…here are the ones I wrapped up to take home…some nice druse plates of gray and some pretty ones with poker chips attached, I also pulled out several single and twin crystals….

21 Wrapping These Up to Take Home

I found a pretty sunset on the way back home…first in downtown Steelville….

Blue Hole Expansion and Hematite…

I decided to go back to the secret spot to see if I could dig a few more blue poker chip crystal clusters out so I could take a few to Ian, my geologist friend in Colorado, as I was planning to drive out there the following week, taking my Mom and Dad out there for their 50th anniversary to see the fall colors and ride the steam train at Durango…they have never been to Colorado in the fall and the last time we rode the train was 45 years ago..when I was a wee little guy.

Docia met me there, she wanted to go up on top and see if she could dig out some more of the rainbow colored druse plates, so we met there and discovered some more rock had been removed recently….

02 Taking Advantage and Looking

…so I decided to look at the floor level and see if I could find any pockets along the newly scraped and dug area, and within moments, found a slight depression and started scratching…

05 Slight Depression Here

..and began finding calcite chunks and crystals right away….

06 Little Scratching Produces Crystals

07 Crystals and Chunks

..and just a little under the surface, I made a discovery I have never found here before…poker chip crystals with a hematite mixture…and some pyrite or chacopyrite mixed in as well…I have def never seen pyrite or chalcopyrite there at all.

08 Hematite and Poker Chips

coming from this pocket here…as you can see there is a little bluff area here too….

09 Hematite Pocket Here

..standard signs of a pocket nearby….but this one contained poker chips and hematite matrix meshed together…def a new one for me. as you can see, I also removed some orangey poker chip crystals too…

10 Hematite & Crystal Pocket

…after cleaning out this shallow pocket that deadended real quickly, I decided to go back over and see if the blue poker chip hole could be expanded. Docia was coming down from the top with two bags full of druse plates…she decided to take a break and see what she could find down below. I moved some rock around in the shaded area and fairly soon found another pocket opening up about a foot from the blue hole…

11 Blue Holes Expanded

…I called Docia over and turned one of the pockets over to her while I worked the new one…within minutes, we both began pulling crystals out of the pockets…here is the one I was working….

12 Another Blue Hole Found

…and here is one of the smaller clusters I pulled out of the new pocket…apologize for the blurriness…

13 Blue Chip Cluster

Docia and I worked those pockets for at least an hour and then she decided to go back up above and see if she could find more druse plates…..I wrapped up what I found in the blue hole and then returned to the same area and scratched around a bit more…and within a few minutes, the bottom dropped out and a hole appeared…

14 Hole Opens Up

…I opened it up a bit more and some rocks fell down in the hole and the splash sounded very deep….

15 Hole Opens Up

…and I opened it up a bit more and reached my hand down into about ten inches of cool water to retrieve a few crystals and plates with crystals….

16 Initial Pocket Hole

…and here is a closer up photo of the crystals…

17 Some Plates Druse and Chips

…I spent a few extra minutes expanding the pocket to one side and pulled a few more crystals out…before running out of steam for the day….at least I had some more nice crystals to take to Emmie and Ian though….

September…Catching Up…

Sorry everyone…I took the latter part of September off to drive my parents out to Colorado so they could see some beautiful fall color and ride the steam train at Durango, as part of their 50th anniversary. They no longer like to make the long drives and after everything they have done for me, I volunteered to do the driving for them. I had taken the last weekend off at work, back in January when we pick our shifts to work, and thought then that I would attend the gem and mineral show in Joplin again….it wasnt held last year due to the catastrophic tornado that ravaged the entire city. My mom and I were talking over dinner one evening and she remarked to me that she and dad would love to travel out to Colorado and see some beautiful fall color and once again ride the train at Durango…it has been 45 years since we rode it…and I only remember bits and pieces of it…but they couldnt handle drives any longer than five hours. I told Mom I had taken that weekend off, giving me a week off, and would love to take them out there instead, so we started planning it out back in August. If interested, you can check out that story and the photos at my other blog site,  http://jwjphotoblog.com

I went rockhunting two times before the Colorado trip and even took a couple of care packages out there with me, one for my second cousin Emmie, who is an aspiring geologist in Denver and just started first grade this year….and one for my geologist buddy Ian Merkel, who is in the Evergreen area and works for the Henderson Mine Company. I took them some Missouri druse, poker chip crystals and clusters, some Arkansas quartz, and some western Kentucky fluorite.

So on this Sunday, I decided to go back to the secret spot and check out an area in the pile that I had a sneaking suspicion that there might be a pocket lurking nearby…I had crisscrossed this particular area a few times and seen some sign, plus there was a huge boulder there that had crystals on it…everything just seemed to add up and I just needed to do some physical researching to see if it truly would add up.

Missy and I took off early that morning to avoid the heat….arriving about sunrise….and what a pretty sunrise it was….

01 Sunrise Above Huzzah

…and a few minutes later, as we were climbing up a hill from a valley floor, we spotted several very pretty deer in a field to the left of the road…I pulled over to photograph them in the early morning light….they stood still for one shot and then….

02 Deer in Field by Huzzah

…their flags came up and off they fled toward the woods and I mean…FAST….

03 Deer Spooked and Flee

..we headed on down the road and arrived soon after…I checked the sloped area I had found the massive chunk of poker chip crystals, and discovered another slide had occurred while I wasnt there and the chunk was apparently buried…

04 Sloped Pocket

05 Nothing More Found

..I didnt have the energy required to clean it off to look for more, so I opted to go over to the pile and look at another area that I figured had a pocket as well…another area I had criss crossed several times and always found crystals nearby…mainly at the base of a large boulder covered on one side with crystals.

06 Pile With Big Boulder

and the next photo shows a few of the crystals that I picked up out of the surrounding rocks and dirt after digging down around the base of the boulder above….

07 Few Crystals and Clusters Found

…giving further confirmation that there could potentially be more nice stuff below or around it…so on I dug, in behind the boulder as well as I could. I tried to be as careful as possible with a lot of bigger rocks up above me and this pocket….it could slide down and bury the work I had done so far anytime….

08 Pocket Opens Base of Boulder

….and as soon as I started digging in behind the boulder, this pocket luckily opened up pretty quickly…I was able to pull enough small crystals out to give me hope there was more in there, prob just further back which meant more careful digging. I began removing some of the bigger rocks above and around it, creating a couple of diversionary slide directions for it to go if it decided to…and as the pocket opened up more from above, more crystals started showing up inside….

09 Looking Inside

…as it opened up, a few chunks of matrix with crystals attached, fell out of the back of the pocket….

10 Opening Up Pocket

11 Large Crystal Found

Well I kept on digging and this pocket started to go deeper, down and further back…I was pulling out small crystals so that was motivating me to keep on digging….

12 Pocket Goes Deeper

…and pretty soon there was calcite signs everywhere inside the pocket…on the walls and ceiling area and floor of it…

13 More Signs Found

…and within minutes, another pretty pocket opened up….

14 Another Pocket Opens Up

…and since it was so pretty looking, I decided I didnt want to damage it, so I began clearing rocks from above and around the pocket, so I didnt have another controlled, or worse, uncontrolled slide….at any rate, I managed to clear out the pocket and clear out the surrounding area….

15 Cleared Off and Around

…and as soon as I began digging around the cleared edges, I stumbled upon yet another pretty pocket….

16 Yet Another Pocket Found

and this one started producing some bigger chunks of crystals…I was beginning to think this would be a lot more fun if all the rock hanging up above wasn`t….

17 New Pocket Expands

…and this is one of the druse plates that came out of this pocket as well…

18 Druse Plate Uncovered

…and here is a pile of crystals that came out of these pockets….

19 Crystals Found So Far

…and then the inevitable occurred….only this one was a controlled slide…I did it to clear it off and hopefully get into more pockets, however….

20 Cave In

…I didn`t plan for the really big one that came down…and it was so heavy I couldnt even move more than one end of it at a time…so that is where I stopped for the day.

MFQ Again…

Well I am late once again in finishing the two part story from mid August…this time I have a semi good excuse though…we had a pretty bad storm roll through here last week that caused some wind damage and some lightning damage to alot of computers in our area. My computer didnt want to work well the next day, kept locking up on me and then would only work in spurts, so I limped along with it til Monday, then had my telephone carrier come out and check all the lines and when it still didnt want to work, I took it down to my computer repair folks at A to Z, and after a couple of hours on the diagnostic table, they found it was a bad spot on my terradrive  instead. Chris was able to fix it and its been fine ever since, but I also found out while there, that terradrives only last about a year, due to their size…he said I would be better off with a 500 gig hard drive instead, even an external drive would be better. If I had known this drive was only good for a year, when I purchased it last year, I def wouldnt have bought it. Food for thought.

Missy and I got up early on Sunday the 12th and headed to MFQ…arrived about 8 am…to find a cloudy sky instead of a sunny sky…meaning the weather people got the forecast wrong once again, and this time a pleasant mistake instead. I can live with these types of blunders, let me tell ya…65 degrees is much more pleasant to start digging in than a humid 85 dgrees…any day and twice on Sundays. 🙂

02 Arrival Cloudy Skies

This time I drove on over to the middle of the north wall, since it was directly below some of the new upper bench and wanted to see if there were any pockets of dolomite druse or poker chips over there as well…I got out of my truck and snapped the photo above looking south and slightly west, and the photo below looking east along the north wall…

03 Looking South

…and after getting my boots on, I looked west and began to think I had better get a move on or I wouldnt be doing much digging at all…

04 Rain Showers Heading My Way

…at least not staying dry while digging…as it was, it only sprinkled a few times and that was all…I actually wouldnt have minded having to stop and wait out a good rain shower down there, am sure they are in just as much need of moisture as we are up here. I got my boots laced up and grabbed my mini mattox and a bag, and walked over to an area of fall down material, that had some shiny stuff about midway up it….

05 Started Looking Here

I could see some seams of calcite here and there, and after climbing up a bit to the left side, I was able to find just a few poker chips in some matrix, but that was about it. I checked the walls up and down both sides and then went up to the upper bench where I was able to fill yet another bag with some beautiful fall down material in both druse and poker chips. After spending about an hour up there and filling two more bags eventually, I came back down to check out the pocket on the north wall that Docia had pointed out originally to me and that I had already worked on once before…

06 Returned to Pocket

…I wanted to check on it at least once more, when I left it the last time I knew there were more crystals inside but it was gonna take quite a bit to get to them and get them out. I was definitely out of energy the last time I had been there but was ready to tackle the job this time. As I was scoping it out though, I noticed a few signs of crystals on the left side of this hanging ledge, and so I started cleaning off that side and sure enough, I found a pocket of some poker chips and dolomite druse over there as well…

07 Found Some on Left Side

The photo below shows a close up of the pocket that turned out to be fairly shallow and I was able to remove the dolomite druse pieces and few poker chip clusters in about twenty minutes…

08 Pocket Found Here

..and then I moved over to photograph one of the areas of poker chips that I left attached to the interior wall the last time there, and hoped to be able to remove this trip….

10 Poker Chips Embedded

…as I did so, I noticed that the sun had finally come out and was beginning to warm things up. I decided to get a quick water break in and then return with my tools to see what goodies I could remove from inside the main area.

11 Sun Comes Out Finally

As I was walking to the truck, I looked west and noticed Missy had finished her running around and was now chillin out in the shade from the North Wall…..

12 Missy Chills

…I returned with my hammer and chisel and another bag with some wrapping cloths in case I was able to remove some really pretty ones. The photo below shows the area I am about to dig into and explore more,  to get to the pockets of crystals that are inside it.

This is actually the base of a large hanging curtain of rock….

13 Bluff Shelf Pocket

..attached to the main north wall…I say shelf, because its vertical and not horizontal, and this curtain of rock that covers the main pockets inside,  is about six to eight inches thick, three feet wide and about ten to twelve feet high…as you can see in the photo below….

14 Section of Wall

…and you can see in the closer up photo above that I have chiseled off some of the base support in order to create an opening big enough to reach in and remove several pockets of goodies inside…and yes, it worries me each time I have chiseled off more and more base rock. I have removed about seven bags full of goodies from there so far. I`m hoping that curtain of rock comes down on its own before I return there the next time.

Within a few minutes of removing the last crystals, it had warmed up to about 92 degrees and I decided to pack up and head home. I`ll add some photos of the cleaned up crystals and clusters that I found there that day.

On the way home, we spotted these old barn buildings next to a creek on Hwy B that were nice to look at….

15 Barns and Trees

…the trees framing them really set them off well….

Secret Spot and MFQ in One Weekend

I had the weekend off last week and nothing going on…had a chance to go to southern Arkansas, near Mt Ida…one of my favorite second cousins got married in the Gulf in July and was hosting her reception for family and friends who couldnt make it down for the nuptials…if she had held it in September or October when cooler, I prob would have attended, but Arkansas is normally very hot in August, and on my weekend off, I would have been pushed for time, so I opted to stay home and rockhunt instead.  I wish Cassie and her new beau the very best, hopefully they will be at the family reunion in November and I can visit with them then.

Missy and I loaded up the truck early Saturday morning and headed to the secret spot. I figured I would check on that blue hole pocket from a couple of weeks ago and see if I could find another opening to it, see if I could find a few more  crystals in it. However, soon after arriving, that all went out the window. I decided to look around up on the pile first, it looked like it might have been recently disturbed, so I did a fairly brief walk around and while I didnt find any freshly disturbed pockets, I did find a nice big chunk of druse quartz and was able to walk it down off the pile and down to the floor. I loaded it up last before heading home.

I walked back to the truck and grabbed another bag and headed to an older pocket that appeared to have a pocket exposed…thought I would check it out and see if there was indeed a pocket there or a dead end….on the way to it, I scratched around in another one, shown below on the left side….

01 Started on the Left

…the only thing I found in this pocket that was new to me was a perfectly round hole as I dug down into it….

04 Hole Found In Middle

…which turned out to be a drill hole, nothing more….so I ambled on over to the original pocket I wanted to explore more, and dug it out…

02 Expanded This Pocket

…and here is the ledge with what appears to be a pocket underneath it…what originally caught my attention…..

03 Looks Like More Under Ledge

…I reached in and pulled out a few loose poker chip crystals and figured what the heck…lets chip it out and see where it goes, if anywhere….

06 Crystals Under Ledge

…I started chipping out this corner, as it opened up a small pocket when I started hammering and so I started here and cleaned it out first, only pulling one or two small crystals out. I then broke open the roof and pulled out a few roof plates and this pocket opened up underneath….

07 Under Ledge Pocket Opens Up

…so I decided to explore further and see what I could find. I pulled a few loose crystals out and it appeared that there might be another pocket on behind this one….but I concentrated on pulling the loose ones in this clay matrix out first….

08 Crystals in Clay Matrix

…and so I decided to peel back the top of the pocket as far as I could and see where it led…

09 Peeling Back the Top

…and found yet another pocket behind it….as I had thought.

10 More Pockets Found

So I decided to clean this pocket out and then peel back yet another roof layer….this time not one pocket hole opened up, but two and then shortly after, three holes were before me…

11 Another Pocket Opens

…things were starting to get interesting now…I cleaned around and peeled back yet another layer to make things easier to get to the pocket holes…here you can see inside one of the holes and see the crystals waiting inside for me…..

12 Crystals Under Druse Plates

…hiding under druse plates that were very solid feeling to my chisel and hammer….so I concentrated instead on peeling back more of the roof layer….no easy task in itself believe me…as you can see the protective rock layer is getting thicker and thicker above the pockets….by now I was swinging my four pound hammer with both hands and giving it everything I had to break them apart….

13 Peeling Back Layers Again

…and now, as you can see in the photo above, another hole has opened up and this one appears to be deeper than the others…

14 This One is Deep

I reached into this one and pulled out a few loose crystals and a few small plates of pretty druse with some bubbles and soda straws on them….and a few nice combo plates of druse and chips as well…you can see the initial finds from this pocket alone in the next few photos….some with hematite balls on them….

15 Some Pulled Out So Far

16 Pretty Druse Plate

17 Druse Wtth Chip Attached

18 Hematite Balls Attached

I widened the opening to this deep pocket entrance and took a few moments to move the growing pile of plates and crystals farther to the right and then moved some bigger ugly rocks further back…..

19 Widening and Deepening

…and here is a close up of the growing pile above….

32 An Area I had Long Studied

…..I then took a break, grabbed a bottle of water and a brownie that my mom had made…she makes the best brownies I have ever ate….bar none…she made me a big bowl of them a couple of weeks ago for my birthday and then made some more recently.

I came back and looked into the larger entrance to the deeper pocket and saw several crystals inside it….

21 Full of Crystals

…I removed what I could and then peeled back the roof plates once again….

22 Roof Plates Pounded Down

…and about four fairly large roof plates came out of this, but one or two with damage, as this next photo shows…they dont always come out nice and pristine….

23 One of the Roof Plates

…and after looking down into the pocket, I could see there were yet more roof plates in the pocket that would prevent me from getting to even more crystals, so once again I pounded the thick protective rock plates out of the way…boy was I getting a workout today….

24 Peeling Back Again

…however now you can also see that there were crystals lying in the bottom of this pocket all over the place…some were attached to the bottom and some were loose…you can also see yet another thick roof plate inside the pocket on the right side that would have to be removed….

25 Crystals All Over

…and here are more photos showing roof plates and crystals removed from the pockets so far….

26 Crystals and Roof Plates

27 Druse Plates and Crystals

28 Druse Plate with Chip Attached

29 Combos and Crystals

..I ran into the back of the pocket soon after so I moved a few feet away and scratched down only to find some shallow pockets with some holie druse, but no crystals….

30 Three Feet Away

…after spending about twenty minutes scratching and digging to find this out, I took another water and brownie break, and then walked up to the blue hole pocket to check it out. I didnt find any new openings around the existing pocket I had found a few weeks prior, so I moved over about ten feet and scratched around and still didnt find anything new. I stood up and stretched and looked up and saw some crystals loose in clay dirt, on a short sloped pile that I had studied before and never checked into any further. This time I climbed up and started digging around and pretty soon a nice loose poker chip crystal tumbled down into my hands…I started digging more and pretty soon I had about eight crystals sitting off to the side. I walked back to my truck, pulled it up closer and grabbed two more bags and some wrapping material for just in case my hunch turned true…

32 An Area I had Long Studied

…I dug down some more and little did I know what was about to come….I triggered a controlled slide of a line of rocks above….

36 Controlled Landslide Triggered

…and as soon as the dust cleared and I was able to clear the loose debris and rocks in front…….lo and behold, right in front of me, were two nice football sized chunks of solid poker chip crystals in a pocket that literally just opened up and fell down with the controlled slide of rocks….

34 This Pocket Opened Up

…and behind them was a MASSIVE chunk of poker chips….and I mean MASSIVE !!!!

35 Big One Still in Pocket

this thing is probably three feet high and solid…and yes its still there…gonna have to do yet another controlled slide to get to it…I pulled so many crystals out above and around and below it though….enough to fill three bags…yes I had to go back to the truck and get another bag and more wrapping cloths…I had triples and twins and clusters and combos just all over the place around this massive chunk….I was quite happy and pretty soon it was evident that it was not only getting warmer but I was wearing down…so I stopped digging and started wrapping. After about twenty minutes of wrapping tho, I looked up and saw yet another pocket of crystals imbedded in the dirt….

37 Pocket of Crystals Imbedded

…so I gathered more energy from that and removed as many of them as I could and wrapped up even more….here is the last photo of the crystals from these two pockets before I took off for home about mid afternoon….

38 Pile of Crystals and Plates

...as you can see, a very nice selection of crystals and even some druse plates of bubbly gray druse, that were in with the crystals…all in all another good day`s haul….stay tuned for the MFQ story tho….

Birthday Weekend and Light Duty Requirement

I decided to take my birthday weekend off this year since I have worked so many of my birthdays in the past several years when others wanted off. I checked the schedule at work a few weeks ago and figured up my vacation time would allow it and reserved the weekend off with my supervisor. I fully intended to travel down to Marion, Kentucky and dig for fluorite as they were having their July public dig during the same weekend as well.

I also had this knot on my right arm for the past few weeks and it wasnt going away, it was starting to worry me a bit cause it would expand in size each time it came back and get sore, I couldnt even set my arm down on my desk at work without a sharp pain from it, as it was right above my elbow, so on Wednesday afternoon, I paid my doctor a visit to check it out. He commended me for coming in to check it out and offered to drain it, so I said sure, why not. If I had known what was going to happen next, given my travel plans for the weekend, I might have delayed it a few more days. You know what they say about hindsight being twenty twenty.

First he sprayed it with something that froze the skin, then he drained it with some needles and removed alot of tissue inside it, and then he stitched it up…first time I have ever had stitches folks. As he is stitching it up…he informs me that I`m restricted to light duty til at least Monday and he is going to wrap it and it has to stay wrapped til Monday, and then a week from Monday he will take the stitches out. I told him I had planned to drive down to the Eureka Mine and dig for fluorite crystals for the weekend, which requires strenoous work and he said not this weekend buddy. He did give me the okay to do some rockhunting as long as it didnt require strenuous hammering or digging tho, so I changed my plans and decided to stay home and dig locally instead.

Soon after leaving his office, I drove down to Viburnum and met up with Docia and we drove to my rock and mineral dealer friend`s house to purchase some of his beautiful chalcopyrite specimens, which is in a separate story on this site.  Then for the next couple of days, I tried to get used to the pain as well as a routine of unwrapping the bandage and applying neosporin and re-wrapping the bandage, as well as getting into the habit of taking a few tylenols or aleve for the pain each evening before bed. The biggest thing to get used to was not setting my elbow down on the computer desk or bumping it…the penalty was a sharp pain, so it sunk in fast. Come Saturday morning though, bright and early, Missy and I headed to Eminence to see if we could find some more beautiful stuff. I said a short prayer for safe driving and my wish to find some beautiful crystals there. Lets just say my prayers were answered in a very positive way.

Missy and I arrived about 7 am and it was fairly cool Saturday morning, specially down there in the Jacks Fork Valley, and we were going to be in the shade for at least a couple of hours as well. Docia and I had been talking to a young couple stationed in the army at Omaha the past few weeks both on the board and by email, and they had been down at Eminence a week or so prior and found some pretty dolomite druse and calcite. It happened to be Krissy`s husband`s birthday weekend then and apparently they were very happy when they left that day. Here is how the quarry looked when we arrived….the east wall below…

01 East Wall

the southeast corner and south wall to the right next….

02 SouthEast Corner

…looking to the north next….

03 Looking North

and looking west and back toward the entrance, and the piles you encounter as you enter…

05 Entrance Piles and Bluff

…I walked down and checked the piles near the entrance and then came up to the south wall, where I have had good luck before. I checked around the base of the fall down pile at the base of the wall and found a pretty poker chip in matrix with a green color to it…I had a good feeling then and there that I was going to leave the quarry very happy. I walked down the wall looking up and down, and soon discovered a nice dolomite druse pocket and set about seeing if I could dig anything pretty out of it….

07 Pocket of Druse

…and here is one of the first chunks of beautiful druse that I pulled from the pocket….

06 First Druse Chunk

I filled about half a bag full of the dolomite druse and then took a water break. After a few minutes of checking for additional pockets along the wall, I found a shallow pocket under a small loose rock that contained some pretty poker chip crystals.

08 Pocket of Poker Chps Embedded

I was only able to harvest a few crystals from it and it appeared that there could be more, however there was a lot of rock hanging over my head up above and I didnt feel safe in trying to pursue it at this time. It was obvious to me, as the sun was rising above the hillside and the shade was beginning to burn off, that I needed to cross over to the far side and check for pockets on the east wall now, while there was still some shade to be found.  Missy and I loaded the truck with my dolomite druse finds and we drove to the far side and parked in the shade there. While Missy stretched out in the deep shade, I walked around the pile on that side and looked for pockets. I found a few shallow druse pockets and then walked back over to the pocket that Docia had told me about a few weeks before, that I had worked a short time and harvested some nice crystals from.

09 Moved Across to East Wall Next

I walked up to it and looked inside and could see it looked the same as before when I was there working it….

10 Pocket Same As Last Time

I placed the tip of my mini mattox inside and raked it downward to clean out what loose fill was inside and make sure there were no wasps or yellow jackets lurking inside…I had my epipen with me but who wants to cut their rockhunting trip short if they dont have to….and was only raking down loose bits and pieces of rock when all of a sudden, near the bottom of the pocket, the bottom dropped out. I grabbed my flashlight and shined it down into this hole and all I could see were crystals and druse sparkling back up at me…another pocket down below…so I started prying and pulling on the rocks surrounding this pocket and working my way toward what I could see. Within a few minutes, I had discovered not only one pocket full of poker chip crystals, some of the dark colored, but also a pocket with some dolomite druse surrounding it just a few inches to the left….

11 Pocket of Poker Chips Behind Rocks

…and here is a closeup of the pocket on the right….

12 Dark Poker Chips Pocket Found

…and a closeup of the pocket with the druse as well…

13 Pocket of Chips Tucked Inside

So now that I knew I had two pockets in front of me ready to check out, I did the wise thing and cleared off some more rock around it, just to make sure there were no obstacles when I started trying to clean them out. Within moments, I had all the loose stuff cleared away and it was obvious, this section was full of pockets all over….

14 Pockets All Over

I stared cleaning out the pockets I could see and was setting them down on a towel that I spread out below me and off to the left some, out of the way from any rocks tumbling down from the pockets I was working on, cause some of these crystals I was pulling out could be described as fragile. After clearing out three pockets, two with poker chips only and two with poker chips and dolomite druse, I decided to enlarge the opening and clear out more covering rock and just see if there were more pockets in there….

15 Started Enlarging Pocket

In so doing, I pulled a couple of bigger chunks out that contained some of the druse and some poker chips attached as well…I set them down by my chisels…

16 Few Large Ones Removed

…and when I pulled them out, low and behold, another pocket was discovered…actually three more pockets but one can prob only see the one below and the one above, not the one behind the lower one though……

17 Another Pocket Down Below

…here is a closeup of the pocket above that you can see……

18 Pocket Under Big Rock

I pulled a couple of those out and they had some pretty dark colored poker chip crystals on them…

19 Dark Chips on Dolomite Druse

…and soon had that pocket cleaned out and spotted the pocket behind it and reached in….and pulled out this BEAUTY !!!!!!……

20 Dolomite Druse with Red

…I was like…HOLIE COW !!!!   It was dolomite druse wtih a couple of small poker chips attached and this bright red colored druse sprinkled in and around it…I have NEVER seen a bright red druse like that at all….thought to myself, man if I had to stop right here and now, I would be happy with this….luckily I didnt have to stop here and I reached back in and found even more pieces of it….

21 Dolomite Druse and Poker Chips

and a few poker chips as well….

22 Chips and Druse From Pockets

…now I know by now you are probably scrolling back up to see that once more so let me save you the trouble and show you an even closer up photo of it….

23 Dolomite Druse From Pocket

ISNT THAT JUST BEAUTIFUL ?????!!!!!!!

I continued to pull more rocks out of the way, now determined more than ever to find another pocket and hopefully more of that beautiful druse with the red coloring on it….

24 Easier Access to Pocket Now

I found one more pocket and it was a good thing…it was starting to get really warm and approaching noon, so I decided to clean this one out and wrap everything up and start toward home. After a fruitful morning of light digging and collecting, I was ready to head home.

Here is how the pocket looked when I left….

25 Big Rock Removed

…the last thing I removed was that large hanging chunk inside the pocket, the one I left inside the last time there, that was covered on one side with crystals….and here is a final shot of what I took out of there during those two hours of digging it out….

27 Pretty Good Haul

We got out of there about 11:45 am and headed east on 106 over to Hwy B and then turned north…for the most part a very straight road…then west a few miles on Hwy 72 and north again on TT to KK….as we were passing the turnoff to Brushy Creek Mine on KK, a very large and pretty bald eagle swooped down in front of me about fifty yards and started flapping those huge wings and climbing…climbing….climbing up in front of us….Missy had her nose glued to the windshield watching it…it was prob one of the largest eagles I have ever seen….and just absolutely beautiful to watch…I`m sure the guy that passed me going south was wondering what the heck I was looking at with my gaze to the left and up as we were watching it glide down into the top of a tall pine tree next to the road….oh well, dont get to see those majestic and beautiful birds everyday….I was quite thankful that my prayer was answered and felt very blessed on my birthday weekend.

I`ll get some of those beauties cleaned up and added so you can see what I found and why I was so happy.

A Friend`s Collection of Beautiful Chalcopyrite

If anyone is looking for some beautiful chalcopyrite for your collection, I know the perfect guy for you to contact. I met David a few years ago at the Joplin, Missouri Rock and Gem Show at Schifferdecker Park in late September.  I had just arrived at Memorial Auditorium in downtown Joplin for the show and he had a booth set up on the east side of the auditorium. When I walked up and began looking at the variety of beautiful minerals from several of the Doe Run Viburnum Trend Mines,  he was busy taking care of customers on the other side of the booth and his wife walked over and answered my questions. I was quite taken with the large variety of calcite crystals and lead cubes and just in awe of the multiple colors of what I later learned from him, was chalcopyrite, which is a copper mineral. I remember purchasing a nice plate of druse quartz covered in pyrite and marcasite from him that morning, and returning later the next day and purchasing a few more from him.

I never have a problem purchasing minerals I know I`ll never have a chance to collect myself…I say never, because its pretty safe to say I wont be going down half a mile deep in any of the Doe Run Mines anytime soon, if ever at all. Thats where you have to go to find beautiful specimens like the ones in David`s collection.

Recently, a friend and I traveled down to his house and met with David, and after reviewing what he had in stock, purchased a few specimens from him yet again. See for yourself, and if you like what you see and are interested in making some as well, let me know and I`ll put you in touch with him.

06 Large Crystal Piece with Chalcopyrite

However…having said that,  let me point out….  the mass of calcite crystals with some chalcopyrite sprinkled in, pictured above center stage, is no longer available because its now part of my collection.
